Full disclosure: author Daniel M. Kimmel is my friend, and my colleague in The Boston Online Film Critics Association. However I can honestly say that I would have loved his book Shh! It’s a Secret: a novel about Aliens, Hollywood, and the Bartender’s Guide, regardless of whether I knew him personally. Kimmel’s debut novel is brilliant satire of the film industry, which also happens to be a hilarious, heartwarming science fiction story about unexpected friendship.

Boston Online Film Critics Association Releases 2012 Awards

As a member of the Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA), I’m proud to share with you the results of our organization’s first ever awards, and some of my thoughts on the winners. For the full list of awards, please visit our awards post.

I don’t share the same enthusiasm as my colleagues for Kathryn Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty,” in the categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Editing. However I definitely agree with choices for Best Actor (Daniel Day Lewis, “Lincoln”), Best Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones, “Lincoln”), and Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins, “Skyfall”).

My personal favorite ensemble cast was the members of Ben Affleck’s “Argo,” and my favorite films that made our group’s 10 Best Films of the Year are starred below. More may be added to my list as I catch up on some of the films below. Since I work full-time on top of my writing, it can be harder to see everything as quickly as my colleagues.

ZERO DARK THIRTY
BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD

MOONRISE KINGDOM
DJANGO UNCHAINED
OSLO, AUGUST 31ST

May 24, 2012 (Boston, MA) – The Boston Online Film Critics Association announced their official formation today, seeking to fill a void in the Boston film criticism community. Monica Castillo, freelance writer for The Phoenix, El Planeta, and Dig Boston, and Daniel Kimmel, author and writer for Variety, North Shore Movies, and The Jewish Advocate will serve as co-chairs for 2012 calendar year.

The organization’s membership will be comprised of both established and up-and-coming online film critics based in the Boston area. Critics from respected outlets such as The Improper Bostonian, Edge Boston, Post-Movie Podcast, Boston Latino, Starpulse.com, and filmcritic.com have already joined this new organization, which plans to expand its roster in the coming year.

Boston is home to a thriving film scene, with a burgeoning community of critics writing for publications that collectively receive over 15 million impressions/page views per month. The Boston Online Film Critics Association will gather together some of the most exciting personalities in the online world of film criticism.

The first annual Boston Online Film Critics Association awards will be handed out at the end of 2012. As with its focus in the Boston area, Boston Online Film Critics Association will award accolades to local filmmakers and individuals who have an important hand in shaping the local film community. In addition to year-end awards, the organization will be actively involved in the Boston film community by hosting events such as screenings, film discussion groups, participating in local film festivals and supporting up-and-coming filmmakers.
