Spoilerpiece Theatre Episode 79: 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi

“Spoilerpiece Theatre” is a weekly movie podcast where I talk about new releases with fellow BOFCA critics Dave Riedel and Kris Jenson. We don’t give a shit about spoilers. We just want to talk about the movies.

In Episode 79 below, we review 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, Anomalisa, and Mustang. After a discussion of our favorite unorthodox movie quotes, we kick off this week’s episode with a conversation about Anomalisa, a film that neither Kris nor Dave enjoys. Kris describes it as a 60 minute idea in a 90 minute movie, while Dave harps on its unlikable main character and the fact that nothing happens. Dave likes like long movies where nothing happens, but apparently not short ones. Following some general talk about Charlie Kaufman movies, Kris and I jump into Anomalisa, a movie that I am super fired up to talk about. Not even a shirtless John Krasinski can stop me from ripping into its awful sense of time, complete lack of subtlety, and its brazen celebration of masculinity. A brief interlude on conspiracy theories almost threatens to derail the show, although we hold it together so I can describe MUSTANG, a French film set in Turkey with a great sense of humor, a strong feminist bent, and a fuck you ending that I really dig.
